Then transfer to Arenal and check in at your hotel. Arenal is the youngest and most active of all the mountains in Costa Rica. Arenal rises 1657 metres above sea level and overlooks Lake Arenal; both are part of Arenal Volcano National Park. The country's most active volcano, Arenal's eruptions are strombolian in type, being frequent but moderate and can be viewed without danger as long as the viewers are behind the safety perimeter. This constant activity and minimal endangerment makes Arenal a popular tourist destination, especially at night, because the lava and incandescent rocks make a spectacular sight.

After breakfast transfer to the North Pacific. While we drive you will enjoy the scenic beauty of the lake Arenal, the largest of Costa Rica. Surrounded by rolling hills of pastured and forested land, the imposing cone of Volcan Arenal dominates its eastern vista. Following the 1968 eruption, Lake Arenal was enlarged to 3 times its original size, an area of 85.5 km (33 sq. miles). Now its basin forms a hydroelectric project that produces 9% of Costa Rica's electricity. Lake Arenal is the key driver in a nationwide hydroelectric project that currently produces the majority of electricity for the entire country. Water depth generally varies between 100 and 200 feet (61 m). The communities of "old" Arenal and Tronadora were submerged by the expanded lake.
Lunch on route. Check in at the Lodge and hike to the Rincón de la Vieja Volcano National Park to explore the mud pots and transition from the tropical dry forest to the rainforest, natural habitat of monkeys, toucans, coatis, agoutis and other forms of wildlife. Rincón de la Vieja (1,895 meters), an active volcano in a period of relative calm, is the largest of five volcanoes that make up the Cordillera de Guanacaste. It is composed of nine separate but contiguous volcanic craters, with dormant Santa María (1,916 meters) the tallest and most easterly. Its crater harbors a forest‐rimmed lake popular with quetzals, linnets, and tapirs. The main crater‐‐Von Seebach, sometimes called the Rincón de la Vieja crater‐‐still steams. Icy Lake Los Jilgueros lies between the two craters. The last serious eruption was in 1983. The attractions are protected in the 14,083‐hectare Parque Nacional Volcán Rincón de la Vieja, which extends from 650 to 1,965 meters in elevation on both the Caribbean and Pacific flanks of the cordillera.
