2007 Highlights
Bhutan – Tshechu
Bhutan or the "Land of the Peaceful Dragon" is a country of sprawling forests, venerated monasteries, overpowering fortresses, lush green valleys fed by bountiful rivers and age-old practices. Held throughout the year, a Tshechu is a religious festival celebrating Buddhism in Bhutan. The festivals take several days and include numerous dances, singing, and music. The performers wear brilliant costumes, and local people dress in their finest clothes and jewelry.
Tibet– Shoton (Yogurt) Festival
So magnetic is its fame that a mere mention of Tibet conjures up images of grandeur and spirituality amidst a wild and uncompromising landscape. This 5-day festival highlights Buddha paintings, Tibetan opera, dances, and yak races. The famous tangka portraying Qamba Buddha is unveiled at a special ceremony at the Drepung Monastery for a short two hours with thousands of spectators. The opera performances can be seen at Norbulingka, the summer palace of the Dalai Lama. August 12-18, 2007.
