Boulder, CO – Climbing the tallest mountain in Africa is not your average adventure. In fact, it can be life changing. In August 2008, John Marksberry of Peachtree City, GA will be climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro (19,340 ft) on the 6-day Marangu Route.
The Marangu Route, also called the Coca-Cola Route, is the most popular route to the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro. It takes a minimum of 5 days to complete, and trekkers sleep in huts with simple beds. Although the climb is not a technical climb, summit day is long, strenuous and at high elevation.
Marksberry, 42 and a preacher, will be climbing Kilimanjaro with four others from the Peachtree City area: two dentists, one chiropractor, and one pilot/veterinarian.
This climb will conclude a 12-week sabbatical that Marksberry has been on this year - his first one in 24 years of ministry. This time of rest and renewal will be capped off as he stands on the rooftop of Africa!
In addition to the physical preparation, which has been a blessing, the most powerful preparation he has made was reading the book entitled, "INTO AFRICA" which documents Dr. David Livingstone's meeting with American reporter Henry Morton Stanley (of "Dr. Livingstone I presume?" fame) in the heart of Africa. Much of their explorations and journeys were in what is now Tanzania. It has been inspirational to think of the sacrifices Dr. Livingstone made to reach into Africa in a way that would bring light to the horrors of the slave trade there and to document much of the geography where Western culture travel had been unprecedented.
Mount Kilimanjaro, located three degrees south of the equator in northeastern Tanzania, is the tallest mountain in Africa, and the highest freestanding mountain in the world. "Kilimanjaro is our hottest destination" says Robin Paschall, owner of Adventures Within Reach. "Of the famous 'Seven Summits,' this is the easiest to get to and the easiest to climb. It requires no technical climbing experience, and any moderately fit person can summit the mountain."
