Inti Raymi Festival

Overview

The most popular festival of the year is the Inti Raymi, or "Festival of the Sun" on June 24th.  Locals and tourists gather to celebrate throughout Cusco with the central event at the imposing fortress of Sacsayhuaman.

The Inti Raymi festival evokes the splendid Inca ritual of yore, being carefully scripted by Cuzco professors, archaeologists and historians. At Sacsayhuaman, step by step, thousands of actors enact a long ceremony giving thanks to the sun god, Inti.

At the end of the day, a priest, the Wupariruj, makes his predictions for the year, based on the smoke that wafts up from the fire. The high priests' predictions are then interpreted by the Willac Umo, the lord high priest, who bears the news to the Inca. Finally, at sunset, the Inca orders all to withdraw from the site, and the entire city breaks out into celebrations that will continue for several days.

During this exciting festival time, hotels are booked well in advance, thus, our suggestion to plan now!  You will want to plan your Inca Trail trek or Machu Picchu visit just before or after the festival!

Should you need to get away from the crowds a bit, try a day trip to Maras (saltmines) and Moray, a day hike to Huchuy Qosqo, or a bike trip from Chinchero to Maras.
