Treks: Ol Doinyo Lengai

Ol Doinyo Lengai (or, Mountain of God) is an active volcano with amazing cones of lava and ash inside it's crater. There is a strong smell of sulfur, and you may see smoke escaping from cracks in the earth.

The hike is extremely strenuous, starting at 4000 feet (1200 meters) up to 9500 feet (2890 meters). Hikers begin the 6-hour steep climb around midnight. After sunrise and exploring the crater, there is another 4 hours hiking down. The terrain is loose dirt at the bottom, turning to rock with loose dirt and stones (slippery), turning to steeper rock that requires scrambling.

It will be hot hiking at first, but the top can be very cold. If you arrive before sunrise, you may have to wait a while in the cold for the sun to rise.
