Overview

5 days in Rwanda including

Volcanoes National Park

itinerary

DAY 1: Arrival and transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Meet and greet at the Airport by the local guide. Depending on arrival time, visit Kigali city which includes the Genocide Memorial at Gisozi.

Transfer to Kinigi at the foothills of Volcanoes National Park (Kinigi) for dinner and overnight. (L-D)

Genocide Memorials: In Rwanda, there are Memorials to remember the genocide of 1994 all over the country. The most important Genocide Memorials are those of Kigali (Gisozi) and Murambi (Gikongoro) where the history of the genocide is explained. A visit to the genocide memorial is for most visitors an emotional event.

DAY 2: Gorilla trekking, Volcanoes National Park Rwanda

After breakfast, depart for the headquarters of the Park where the guide will accomplish the necessary formalities. Meet the ranger guide(s) for a briefing about the greatest animal experience ever. Drive to the slopes of one of the Virunga volcanoes for gorilla trekking.

After the trekking, if time allows, lunch at Ruhengeri and in the afternoon an excursion to explore the beautiful lakes in the region (Lake Bulera and Ruhondo). (B-L-D)

DAY 3-4 Optional Activities

Dian Fossey's grave is at the Karisoke Research Centre on the slopes of the Bisoke Volcano where she carried out her studies on the mountain gorillas for 18 years. She was murdered on the 27th of December 1985  at the Karisoke Research Centre and buried near Digit, her favorite gorilla. The excursion will provide excellent background information and this is a wonderful site to see!

The golden monkeys live only in the Virunga Conseravtion Area. They have been well habituated and there are 2 troups. The Kabatwa troop is located not so far from the Park headquarters and the Musanga troop lives near the Karisimbi and has a much longer walking distance. Another experience with excellent photo opportunities!

The Karisimbi Volcano is the fifth highest mountain of Africa. The climb will start early in the morning on the first day and takes 6 hours to an altitude of 3700m for overnight (camping). On the second day, it will take about 4 hours to reach the summit of the volcano. Expect stunning scenery and fascinating landscape. Descent of the volcano will take approximately 6 hours.

DAY 5: Kigali visit and Departure

Pick up from the hotel, and depending on the departure time, there will be a Kigali city trip including the visit of the Genocide Memorial centre at Gizozi. Transfer to the Airport for departure. (B-L)
